The soil for trays- 2 parts garden soil, 1 part sand, 1 part compost, and leaf mould.
Ideal soil for pots - 1 part soil, 1 part leaf mould. water regularly if using clay pots (evaporation of moisture) . When feeding the soil remove 2 cm of soil from the top (without disturbing the roots and replace with manure. Mulch regularly.
Spinach, tomatoes, carrots etc grow well in cement pots. (large 'uns)
For the herb garden one needs pots, trays and pans. - herbs appreciate warmth and light and make for excellent window sill gardens. Mulch, fertilize and loam for soil... give them space to grow.
